Stair Step Multiplication is without the lattice. As shown below, the procedure is to multiply across the digits of the multiplicand with each digit of the multiplier (and to indent for each new digit of the multiplier ) but to write each product along a diagonal as a 2-digit numeral, adding zeros as needed, instead of splitting the product and writing part of it below the problem and the other apart above the problem to be added to the next product. Like Lattice Multiplication, it separates the multiplication from the addition but with no more paper and pencil work than usual. Its main drawback, short of comparing it to a calculator, is that it looks strange to those accustomed to —the usual.
