Chunk It* Division is an extension of Tap & Tally™ division for . It is used with single-digit divisors and is based on skip counting to answer the question, "How many of one number in another number or to make another number?” Three examples of the algorithm are given below. The slashes represent the number of times the divisor was counted and the dots the number of counts remaining. Then, as in the penny game, each of the dots is traded for ten of the next smaller thing and added to however many of whatever things were already present. The long vertical lines between the digits of the dividend are drawn first to contain the work and keep it orderly.

*Chunk It was developed by Deanna Callahan, an elementary school teacher and member of the MOVE IT Math™ guild. It is a meaningful way to divide. If students can skip count, they can learn it in days, not years! Thank you, Deanna.
