MOVE IT with manipulatives! MOVE IT through the curriculum! MOVE IT in the 21st century!

The train at the top refers to three professional development courses for pre-service and practicing elementary school teachers of mathematics: EVERYONE CAN LEARN MATH, ENRICHMENT & ACCELERATION, and ADVANCED TOPICS. The courses are a reflection of ‘Rithmetic in Residence, a summer math camp for K-9 students conducted for two consecutive summers beginning in 1974. To enhance the implementation of the courses, all three are linked to a computerized curriculum database that connects elementary school mathematics topics to more than 1,000 supplementary lessons from exemplary teacher resource materials (e.g., Family Math, Marilyn Burns’ books, Middle School Math with Pizzazz series) and to about 250 such lessons that are from resources that combine mathematics and science (e.g., Delta Science Modules, Project AIMS materials, Used Numbers series).

EVERYONE CAN LEARN MATH is the distinguishing feature of MOVE IT Math. It leads to a rapid and early assimilation of whole number arithmetic. All four arithmetic operations (+, –, x, ÷) are introduced in kindergarten. Virtually ALL children master addition in grade 1, subtraction in grade 2, and multiplication and division in Grade 3 — all with understanding. (For instance, addition is taught with packing lists and subtraction with purchase orders as used in business.) By grade 4, virtually all MOVE IT Math students are two years ahead of their peers in traditional math programs.

The developmental appropriateness of EVERYONE CAN LEARN MATH is determined by two criteria: (1) Can children do it? (2) Do they want to do it? The answer for the can-do criterion is yes, and when children can-do, they want to. Where there’s a way, there’s a will.

In realizing how easily children learn to speak whatever languages they hear, it’s imperative that they hear the language of mathematics early on; otherwise, hardly any of them will ever speak it well. They’ll be like most people who took Spanish as a second language in high school. After years of study, few can claim more than the fluency of a 3-year-old raised in a Spanish speaking family.

MOVE IT Math is quality mathematics taught in sensible ways. In spite of the acceleration it promotes, it leaves no child behind. It reduces elementary school mathematics to a small number of concepts, skills and thought processes that empower students to think their way through the subject rather than try to memorize their way through it. The methodology it teaches addresses a variety of learning styles (visual, auditory, and tactile / kinesthetic) and is applicable to any elementary school math program. Its effectiveness has been documented by the . Currently, the program is being used in more than 3,000 American classrooms in , and its use is on the rise.
